I Never Want to Shave or Wax Again: Will Laser Hair Removal Do the Trick?
If your New Year’s resolution was to never have to shave or wax again, we can help make that resolution a reality with laser hair removal. And it’s probably much cheaper than you realized.
Laser hair removal is quick and virtually painless. While not everyone is an equally good candidate for it, most people find that laser hair removal can zap away unwanted hair, whether it’s on your upper lip or your underarms.
Are you curious? Our providers at eleven19 MedSpa explain more about the benefits of laser hair removal.
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal uses a specific type of laser. At eleven19, we use the Lightsheer laser by Lumenis®. This type of laser uses two wavelengths of energy to target the hair follicles. This destroys the hair at its root, and over time, the follicles stop producing hair.
Most people need a minimum of six laser hair treatments to eliminate the hair growth, although it’s also common to need more. We go over your expected results when you come in for a consultation.
Where we can remove hair
Laser hair removal can remove hair pretty much anywhere that it grows. The most common parts of the body where we remove hair include:
- Eyebrows
- Upper lip
- Cheeks
- Bikini area
- Back
- Legs
- Underarms
The darker your skin, the longer the treatment takes. While anyone can get laser hair removal and see significant results, people with light skin and dark hair are the best candidates for total hair removal.
What laser hair removal is like
If you feel a bit nervous about laser hair removal, you don’t need to feel that way. First, we clean the area where we’re removing the hair. You may get a pair of sunglasses to put on to protect your eyes from the laser.
Then we apply the laser to your skin in short bursts. Most people say that it feels like a mild stinging, similar to being snapped by a rubber band. It’s uncomfortable but usually pretty tolerable.
Who can’t get laser hair removal
The best time to get laser hair removal is when you’re taking a break from using a tanning bed, if applicable.
You should avoid laser hair removal if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have genital herpes (HSV-2) or get cold sores
- Are taking certain medications, such as acne medications
- Have a history of developing keloids
- Have or had skin cancer
We take a full health history when you come in for a consultation, but most people can undergo laser hair removal.
The results
Surely, this is the part you want to know about: What kind of results can you expect?
First, it’s not instantaneous. Most people require at least six sessions to fully eliminate their hair, although many see a 10-25% reduction in hair growth after the first session. Hair grows on different cycles, so we need to target each one. Sessions are usually about six weeks apart.
After a session, your skin may be a little red or sensitive; this symptom should go away. Be extra vigilant about using sunscreen after laser treatments.
