Say Goodbye to Your Double Chin Once and For All

If you have a double chin, you probably hate looking in the mirror. Also known as submental fat, double chins tend to be especially resistant to traditional weight loss efforts. Even if you lose a lot of weight elsewhere on your body, your double chin may be stubborn and difficult to eliminate.

Until recently, surgery was the only way to remove a double chin. For many people, surgery isn’t very appealing because of the long recovery time, cost, and risks inherent in surgery.

But now, a new option called Kybella® can help you get rid of submental fat with only a couple of injections. In this blog, our providers at eleven19 Medical + Weight Loss explain more about this procedure.

What Kybella is

Kybella is an FDA-approved form of deoxycholic acid, an enzyme that your body produces naturally. When injected into your chin fat, it works to dissolve the fat. It usually takes a few sessions to fully dissolve the fat.

While it seems like Kybella could replace liposuction to remove fat on other parts of your body, unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. But it can have amazing results reducing the stubborn fat under your chin.

What to expect from the procedure

Kybella is not generally a very painful experience. You can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen before your appointment if you’re concerned. We may also offer the option of using ice or a numbing agent on your skin.

Each procedure only takes about 15 minutes, during which you receive approximately 15-20 injections. For most people, we need to repeat this process two or three times about four to eight weeks apart. But you can receive up to six sessions, as long as each is spaced at least a month apart.

The results you can expect

The younger you are, the better the outcome. That’s because people over 50 find that their skin doesn’t bounce back as quickly due to a loss of skin elasticity, which might leave you with sagging skin under your chin.

The results may be subtle, especially after the first session. You may need additional sessions to see more of a difference. While many people see a significant improvement in their double chin, in others the effects are less pronounced.

Swelling after the injections is normal but temporary. In some cases, you may experience considerable swelling.

The most common side effects in addition to swelling include:

These side effects should go away within a week or two. More severe side effects are rare but possible.

For most people, the injections are uncomplicated, and the recovery goes very smoothly. Although the Kybella is not approved specifically for tightening skin, many of our patients find that the skin under their chin also appears more tightened.

If you’re looking for a way to get rid of your double chin without having surgery, Kybella can be an effective and more affordable solution.
