What to Expect During Your First Botox Treatment

Botox® has come a long way over the years. Once associated with permanently frozen facial expressions on soap opera actresses, today’s Botox treatments are much more subtle. In fact, you could be sitting in the same room with someone who’s had Botox and never be able to tell.

Effective Botox treatments smooth out wrinkles and make you look healthy and refreshed like you’ve just had a restful night of sleep or returned from a relaxing vacation. If you’ve decided to get your first Botox treatment and are wondering what it will be like, the providers at eleven19 Medical Spa + Weight Loss offer this helpful guide.

What Botox is

Botox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin. It’s FDA-approved in small doses to temporarily freeze wrinkles, crow’s feet, and other signs of aging. It works to paralyze the muscles so that wrinkles don’t show up when you try to make certain movements of your facial muscles.

It is most effective on wrinkles that haven’t yet had a chance to form permanently, so it’s better to start earlier rather than later.

What the procedure is like

Although many of our clients do not find the Botox procedure to be too painful, you should tell us if you’re concerned about pain. We can temporarily numb your skin when we’re doing the injections.

We use a very thin needle when we inject Botox itself. We make several small injections with the needle. The whole procedure takes less than 30 minutes, often less than 15 minutes. Afterward, you’re free to go about the rest of your day.

After your Botox injections, avoid lying down for about three to four hours because doing so can increase blood flow to your face, which can interfere with your results. Also avoid any vigorous activity for about 24 hours for the same reason, so plan on skipping the gym the next day.

What kind of results to expect

Initially, don’t be surprised by some minor bruising and swelling after Botox injections. This is a normal and common side effect. Some people also experience headaches, although this is not as common. All of these side effects should go away within a couple of days.

You should notice the maximum effects of the Botox about three days after the procedure, though in some cases, it can be closer to a week. The benefits of Botox last for three to four months.

Many of our patients become regulars who come in every few months for a touch-up of Botox to maintain their more youthful appearance. Of course, you should also use sunscreen to protect your skin from further damage.

Things we need to know

Before you get a Botox treatment, have an honest conversation with us about all of the medications and supplements that you’re taking. Medications such as blood thinners and muscle relaxers can interfere with the treatments. Generally, we advise you to stop taking them a couple of weeks before the procedure.

You should also avoid drinking a nightly glass of wine before your procedure. This is to ensure the best possible results and the greatest safety.

If you would like to look younger and more refreshed, Botox can be a great solution. Call us or schedule an appointment using our online form. We have three convenient locations in Santa Ana, Fullerton, and Ontario, California.
